Continuing through the holiday season, we are exhibiting the amazing brush and ink work by local artist, Aaron Staples.
Aaron Staples is a Portland, Maine based artist and a graduate of Maine College of Art. He creates large sumi ink drawings on sheets of heavy printmaking paper. The work is created using the tools and techniques employed by traditional Japanese calligraphy artists. His style of obsessive mark making yields intensely detailed imagery. This detail elicits a sense of depth that draws the viewer deep into each piece.
The subject matter is largely based on motifs of nature. Expressed within these natural forms are very human existential themes. Allegories of fear, desire, and disenchantment play out in the delicate brushwork.
