I have a story to share with you today friends. It’s not my story, but I’ve been given permission to share with you in order to ask for help. I realize that I ask for you to help with a lot of things, and I appreciate every dollar you contribute and spreading the word.

When you read this story, know that this woman walks amongst us in our community. Her body showing the history of her pain. That even though she has physical and is on her way to emotionally recovery, she still has the mark of slavery on her body. She is the walking embodiment of the word survivor.

I’m guessing that you’ve heard or perhaps used the term “Tramp Stamp” in your life to refer to a lower back tattoo. Did you know that this marking is actually done to women who are part of pimp led prostitution. That women are in fact “branded” ?
The story I’m sharing today is of a woman who has a crude carving of bicycle handlebars on her lower back and the word: “tramp”. She wrote to Suzen Tattoozen-Tanton & Vanessa Truett in October asking for help in her physical recovery. Here is just a small part of her story:

“I am 35 years old and have a little over a year sober. I have been sexually abused in one way or another since as long as I can remember. My father sexually abused me and traded me and my cousin off to my uncle as a child. I left home at the age of 9 and moved in with my godmother in Tucson, Arizona. I started drinking at the age of 10 to deal with my emotional issues and when that did not work at the age of 12 I turned to heroin. I became a ward of the state around the age of 13 due to my father’s sexual abuse and mothers drug use. I never stayed in any of the group homes I was placed into. I would run the streets and find my mother who was at the time a proustite and addicted to crack. Her pimps would have their way with me, I had no self-value and really that was my life unless I was detained. So, I want to fast forward a little while. At the age of 20, I wound up catching Federal charges and was extradited to Eugene, OR from Tucson, AZ....

I did manage throughout the time stay sober on and off but never really focused on myself. I eventually turned back to hard drugs I got caught up with the wrong crowd and wound up being sold to men in Cottage Grove. The man who held me put a tattoo on my lower back it is handlebars and says, tramp. The way I got away from this man was by going to prison. That was in 2011. “

Since her release, she’s been in college, focusing on recovery, serving as a mentor and getting support from Sponsors and Lane County Behavioral Health. Having this covered up would be a integral piece of her recovery as it’s a daily reminder of a life she’s overcome.

Suzen and I have committed 900 dollars in cash and labor to this coverup and are looking for an additional $300 for the remainder of the project. Starting tomorrow Suzen will start the outline process and you will be able to watch its progress.

The cover photo is a rough sketch of the coverup. Tattoo size 11" x 5"...As a lotus with embellishments will replace the existing traumatic property tattoo.
