Event at Spirit Gallery Tattoo
Spirit Gallery Tattoo– New London’s tattoo studio and art gallery – presents "REVEALED," a collection of artwork by photojournalist Scott Indermaur. The show will open on Saturday, December 10, with an artist’s reception from 6-8:30 p.m. which will include a showing of the artist’s film "REVEALED: Portraits from Beneath One’s Surface" at 7p.m.
"REVEALED" centers around one-of-a-kind portraits of individuals who have been given the unique challenge of symbolically capturing their beliefs, essence and spirituality in a small box.
"Upon examining my relationship with my own spirituality, I wanted to learn how other people connect with their sense of self," project creator Scott Indermaur said. "My intentions were to photograph spirituality from a non-literal perspective. I wanted to peel back the layers of traditional spirituality and focus on the individual’s personal essence."
For "REVEALED" Indermaur presented his subjects with a small wooden box and asked to bring items that represented their spiritual experience in which to fill the space. His projects," REVEALED" and "This I Believe REVEALED," have included 160 subjects from around the country. What he finds to be most interesting is the profound effect this project has had on so many of his subjects. Given the opportunity to look within, many experienced a journey that took them much deeper than their initial inner self-examination.
"The concept of identity and the awareness of a higher existence quickly evolved into a vessel of self-exploration and quiet confession. I soon discovered that my subjects shared far more."
"REVEALED" will hang until January 28. Viewing hours are 12- 8 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday at Spirit Gallery Tattoo, located at 207 Bank Street, New London, Conn.
