RedTree Tattoo Gallery is an all disposable, appointment only, Tattoo and Art Gallery, located in Italian Village, bordering the arts district downtown Columbus, Ohio, featuring world-class tattoo artists. Each artist at RedTree focuses on producing custom, one of a kind tattoos, unique to their own style. The owner of RedTree Tattoo Gallery, Durb Morrison, is also the organizer and founder of the Hell City Tattoo Festival located in downtown Columbus, Ohio annually. Durb also began one of the very first tattoo studios in the city back in 1994 and now has established his new tattoo gallery, set to make it’s mark.
RedTree is located in the art influenced Italian Village district. RedTree is in its own red brick building giving it a distinctive look and feel of it’s own. The signage at the tattoo gallery is also very minimalist and does not say “tattoo” on the storefront anywhere. “If you know, then you know”, says Durb. Being appointment only affords the gallery to have a low-key, almost underground approach to it’s look and feel. There is no open sign, there are no hours, the gallery has custom RedTree flags that fly outside of the storefront, signifying when artists are busy tattooing inside. Once inside RedTree, the simplicity of the shop gives it a very sleek and professional feel. The first impression of the interior of Redtree is that of an open and minimalistic space, with a feel and look of only relaxation and creativity.
RedTree Tattoo Artists:
The first station upon entering RedTree is occupied by RedTree Gallery Owner Durb Morrison. His strong new-school traditional style combined with the rich color choices he makes are a combo sought after by many tattoo collectors. Durb can be found many days at RedTree continuing a session with a long time client, or drawing for a new individual who presented him with a fun idea.
Having a deep interest in science and energy, Adam France is at RedTree tattooing large, flowing biological texture or robotic based, full limb projects most days. The paintings that Adam creates also reflect the fascination he has with science and nature. Adam’s clients are very friendly individuals with great attitudes, all having sought his bio-mechanical style and positive attitude.
Nathan Marti is primarily a black and grey tattoo artist focusing on dark subject matter with bio-organic influence incorporated. He discovers most of his reference through nature and imagination when conceptualizing. His tattoos and fine art are that of a well thought out mastermind of texture and various special effects that make his style incredibly unique. His talents are evident on and off of the skin. His artwork on canvas has a special feel only achieved by a high caliber artist like Nathan.
Richard cook has been tattooing for 12 years. The first 5 years was spent in Okinawa, Japan and the east coast in various scummy locations where mostly he learned about the seedier parts of life. Barely escaping a life of crime and degradation, Richard was rescued by tattooing and art. He moved back to northeast Ohio where he was raised. Paintbrush and tattoo machines in hand he was determined to make his mark. He worked in various locations in Bowling Green and Findlay, Ohio. The past 5 years he has called Columbus, Ohio his home. He's now settled in at RedTree Gallery where his grand plan is coming together. Look for his art on skate decks, album jackets, commercial property, t-shirts and private collectors alike. His style can be defined only by the people who enjoy it. He considers himself an Ornamentalist. A made up word, that Richard is slowly defining with his art and approach daily!
Rusty started tattooing in 1994, but quickly realized his apprenticeship was not with the right person. Without a lot of options for another apprenticeship, he stopped tattooing and went to art school where he focused on photography and design. For the next 15 years, he worked as an Art Director for a national company and also started a video production company on the side where he focused on documentary-style work. Most recently, he produced and directed the award winning Hell City documentary. Throughout the years he never lost his love of the tattoo community. He continued to get tattooed and eventually decided to jump back into tattooing as an artist and get a proper apprenticeship. He moved to Columbus, Ohio and started apprenticing under Durb Morrison at RedTree Tattoo Gallery. While apprenticing with Durb, he also worked as a manager for the Hell City tattoo Festival and True Tubes, designed and produced a fine art book for tattooer Kevin Stress called “Year of the Snake”, helped produce video content for Guy Aitchison’s Technique DVD set and started to produce ongoing video content for Tattoo Magazine. Since finishing his apprenticeship, Rusty has been a full time artist at RedTree Tattoo Gallery focusing on a variety of styles including B&G, biomech and American traditional. For an appointment or consultation with Rusty, you can email him at artbyrusty74@gmail.com.
Toby Gehrlich is a soft-spoken guy that lets his tattooing do all the talking. Toby Gehrlich is a refined oil painter that brings his rich talents to the skin as a resident artist and part of the talented crew of RedTree Tattoo Gallery. Toby enjoys working in many mediums of art and consistently creates smooth and flowing images on skin as well as with oils on canvas. Toby grew up on the outskirts of the village Botkins, just 50 miles north of Dayton, Ohio. Spending countless hours in the woods surrounding his home, Toby formed an imaginary world that has influenced his artwork even to this day. Toby began drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil. Only interested in graphite or black and gray drawing as a kid Toby, after long encouragement from his parents, picked up painting in acrylics at the age of 20. In 2000, an opportunity arose in the form of an apprenticeship in tattooing. Toby jumped at the chance and soon found himself tattooing full-time out of a small shop in Wapakoneta. After spending a year and a half in that first shop, Toby thought it time to move forward to larger opportunities. He has recently moved back to Columbus and has had the pleasure to work alongside great artists in Columbus’s premier tattoo shop. When Toby isn’t officially on the clock, he’s working to perfect his art in all aspects or working on paintings for his personal art shows as well as various art shows that he exhibits his work in around the world. Be sure to check out his portfolio on the RedTree website and contact him to begin your next tattoo project!
Below the main floor of Redtree, the basement area is finished and serves as an ideal distribution center for True Tubes (www.truetubes.com). In the other end of the downstairs is an artist lounge with PlayStation, as well as a photography area for professional photo taking of finished work. Another feature of RedTree is that the tattoo artists control nearly everything in the studio with their cell phones and apps designed to control the devices inside, like the stereo, television, client meals and more. An extra bonus for everyone, directly behind the gallery is a custom cookie store where clients go to get their mid-session sugar and caffeine fix. It’s the best of both worlds for artists, clients and also guest artists when they are in town. RedTree Tattoo Gallery is always offering guest artists who are traveling around the country or simply passing through the artistically beautiful city of Columbus, Ohio a clean, friendly, appointment only, all disposable tattoo studio and art gallery to comfortably work from. RedTree has surely sunk it’s roots back into Hell City Tattoo Fest’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio and is blossoming nicely!
